Old Guildfordian of the Year and Speaker:
With an impressive career in politics spanning over two decades, John Day is the Minister for Health and the longest serving Culture and the Arts Minister in Western Australian political history. Initially a dentist, John was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1993 as Member for Darling Range, a seat he held until 2007. Currently representing the Kalamunda electorate, his other notable portfolios have included the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, the Minister for Planning, and the Minister for Science and Innovation. Appointed to the role of Minister for Culture and the Arts in 2008, John has been influential in the ongoing revitalisation of the Perth Cultural Centre. John’s significant work building the profile of the State’s cultural institutions has created a popular destination for cultural entertainment. Now in his eighth year leading the portfolio for Arts and Culture, John has secured $428 million in government investment for a new Western Australian Museum, one of the most significant cultural infrastructure projects currently under development in Australia.
