Old Guildfordian of the Year and Speaker:
Media personality Paul Murray (St 63-67).
With a long and outstanding career in broadcasting and journalism, Paul has built a reputation for intriguing articles and hard-hitting interviews, including those of former Prime Minister John Howard and movie star John Travolta. After being awarded a newspaper cadetship in 1970, Paul has worked at The West Australian and The Western Mail newspapers, and as a radio host at 6PR. His acclaimed work has seen him awarded the State’s top journalism award, the University of WA’s Lovekin Prize, the Daily News Centenary Prize, the Beck Prize for political journalism, and travelling scholarships awarded by the New Zealand and United States governments. Paul rose to the position of Editor at The West Australian and, when he changed career direction to take up broadcasting, was the longest-serving of all the daily metropolitan newspaper editors in Australia. He moved on to work as radio host for 6PR’s morning program, exclusively at first, but found the pull of journalism too great and juggled careers in both fields on and off, sometimes simultaneously, until retirement from radio in 2014.
